Foundations

In 2012 I was invited to participate in a group exhibit at Art Access Gallery in Salt Lake, called Off the Map. Each participant threw two darts at a map of Salt Lake City, and were invited to create artworks based on those locations. My darts landed on Temple Square and an industrial park just east of I-15. While most artists did two separate pieces, I decided to combine mine in a conceptual installation entitled Foundations. The rocks represented the industrial aspect of the city, and were taken, with permission, from the actual site where my dart had landed. The light from above represents Temple Square and the spiritual moorings of the city and its founding. Both aspects form essential parts of the foundations of Salt Lake City. The blank canvas served to visually and conceptually connect the two, inviting viewers to participate in the creation of meaning as they contemplated the unity and diversity represented in the piece.

Later that year, this piece was accepted into the Spiritual and Religious Art of Utah show at the Springville Museum of Art, where it received an Award of Merit.
